What diseases are caused by asbestos exposure?
Respiratory problems leading to: asbestosis (a chronic fibrosis of the lungs pleural plaques) – small areas of scarring on the lungs that do not carry any symptons and pleural thickening ( a non-malignant disease in which the lining of the lung becomes scarred). It can restrict expansion of the lungs and lead to breathlessness, lung cancer and mesothelioma a cancer of the lining of the lungs.
Who can claim?
Those who have worked with asbestos and been diagnosed with asbestos-related conditions. Many people can have asbestos-related problems without realising it. If you have not been diagnosed but think you may be affected, you should ask your GP to refer you for a chest scan.
How much compensation?
Levels of compensation depends on the nature and severity of your problems. Awards can range from around £10,000 to £200,000 for the most serious conditions.
