Crying

Baby CryingBabies cry because they want to tell you something.
It could be something not right or they want feeding, a nappy change or just want a cuddle from mother or father.  Although in time you will learn to recognize the various causes your baby is crying at first, particularly if you are first time parents.

How to calm your baby

Parent comforting a crying babyMost people will pick up and cuddle their crying baby, almost instinctively.  In most cases this is all that is required.  All babies like the attention, they like hearing familiar voices, feeling secure especially when they are in their parents’ arms.  If this cuddling fails to settle your baby, try to see does your baby want a drink of water or is your baby hungry.  Sometimes this will help.  If this fails maybe the baby just needs a nappy change.
Or is your baby feeling hot or cold.  The way to find out is especially for a newborn is feel the nape of your baby’s neck to access whether he/she feels hot or cold.  Also the baby could have wind, in which case lay him/her over your lap or forearm and rub the baby’s back until the wind has gone.
If our baby is regularly crying inconsolably during early evening and is aged between 3 to 14 weeks, he/she may be suffering from colic; therefore you should see your doctor.

During the bout of colic it will be difficult to calm your baby down.  Baby will cry when he/she is tired.  I just find holding your baby (cuddling) and moving in a rhythmical way or rocking will soothe your baby calm them down and soon they will fall asleep.  Last resort drive around the block, that motion can put them asleep.
